Many people visit the Black Hills of South Dakota during the summer months, but they often don’t realize how much more exciting it is if they’d come back in the fall. The colors might not be the same as those of the upper Northeast states, but they’re still pretty spectacular!

Visiting South Dakota in the fall? Make sure to head out to the Black Hills and take in Spearfish Canyon! It's a great drive, and the colors are AMAZING!

A favorite of ours when we visit family in the Black Hills is driving through Spearfish Canyon. You can drive through the entire thing in under an hour, but plan to spend a few hours or even a day! There are so many walking trails, waterfalls, and beautiful photo opportunities!

We got there about a week too late to get the prime colors of the year, but it was still spectacular. We had a fun little family photo shoot!

This is one of the falls. Can you believe what that algae looks like?!

The rushing water is simply breathtaking. I could stand there and just listen to it for hours!

If you decide to come out to the Black Hills of South Dakota – regardless of the time of year – make sure you stop by Mount Rushmore. I think that goes without saying, but I wanted to put it out there anyway!

Want some other great attractions that the kids will enjoy? Here you go:

  • Bear Country USA
  • Reptile Gardens
  • Custer State Park
There are many more that I could list, but I’ll stop there for this go round. If you’re wanting even more Black Hills attraction ideas, check out this website.Looking for great fall activities in other areas? Here you go:

  • Baltimore-DC Area
  • Boston
  • Madison, Mississippi
  • Ohio
  • And some more…
I hope you love the Black Hills of South Dakota as much as I do! What’s your favorite fall spot? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
